MBLEx Exam Cost: $265 Per Attempt, and What Else You Pay
The MBLEx costs $265, paid to FSMTB with your application, and the fee is nonrefundable and nontransferable. Every retake is a new application at the same $265.
That is the floor. A second attempt, a missed appointment, the study materials you buy and your state's licensing fees are what move the total. Here is each piece at a glance, with the details and sources below.
| Item | Cost | Charged by |
|---|---|---|
| MBLEx application (one attempt) | $265 | FSMTB |
| Each retake (new application) | $265 | FSMTB |
| Missed appointment | ATT expires; reapply at $265 | FSMTB |
| Result transfer | $40 | FSMTB |
| ADA testing accommodations | No extra fee | FSMTB |
| MBLEx Check practice exam | $25 | FSMTB |
| e-Study Guide | $35 | FSMTB |
| Print study guide | $39.95 | FSMTB |
| State license | Varies: check your board | Your state board |
| LMTPrep | Free run; Starter $29 or Elite $49, one-time | LMTPrep |
What the $265 covers
The MBLEx Candidate Handbook is short on this: "The MBLEx application fee is $265…" You pay it with your application, and it buys one attempt. There is no separate test-center fee on top. The handbook's fee list has none, and it states that "FSMTB is responsible for all exam delivery costs for an applicant." If a prep page adds a $20 testing fee and quotes $285, it is wrong; we list that and other errors on what MBLEx prep sites get wrong.
Older pages may also show $195. That was the fee until April 1, 2020.
Nonrefundable means exactly that: apply, never test, and the $265 does not come back. ADA testing accommodations, such as extended time, a reader or recorder, or a separate room, carry no extra fee.
Retakes and missed appointments
Each retake is a new application at $265. FSMTB sets no waiting period, so you can reapply immediately, and no attempt limit, though your state board may set one. Two attempts cost $530 in exam fees alone. What to do between attempts is on MBLEx retake.
The avoidable cost is the missed appointment. Don't show up, and your Authorization to Test (ATT) expires: you reapply and pay $265 again. Rescheduling and canceling carry consequences too, so read the scheduling section of the current handbook before you move a date.
FSMTB's own study materials
FSMTB sells its own prep and lists these prices on its MBLEx study tools page:
- MBLEx Check, $25. A 100-question timed practice exam weighted like the content outline, in English or Spanish. FSMTB calls it "the only FSMTB-authorized practice exam."
- e-Study Guide, $35. Includes a 100-question practice exam with answers.
- Print study guide, $39.95.
Those are FSMTB's prices, not ours. Check the page before you buy.
State licensing fees: check your board
Passing the MBLEx is not a license. FSMTB's handbook says it "does not result in a certification or credential of any kind." Your state board issues the license and sets its own fees, which vary by state, so check your board's current fee schedule. Some states add steps of their own: Texas pairs the MBLEx with the Texas Jurisprudence Exam, and Florida requires a 10-hour laws and rules course. Ask your board what each step costs.
What LMTPrep costs
Our simulator runs 100 questions in 110 minutes, one question at a time with no going back, weighted to the seven content areas. We wrote three full forms, 300+ original questions, to FSMTB's outline, with a worked explanation on every question, an untimed practice mode by content area, and a readiness band from our documented scoring method. The real MBLEx adapts which questions you get; our practice form is a fixed set weighted the same way.
A free account gets one full timed run. Paid plans are one-time payments, Starter $29 and Elite $49, with a 7-day money-back guarantee. What each plan includes is on pricing.
